The Handshake

Lesson 2

We have all heard the phrases around first impressions, “you only get one chance to create a great first impression,” “you don’t get a second chance to create a first impression,” the list goes on and on. These quotes all make sense, but how do we ensure we are doing our best to create that first impression?

Your initial in-person first impression usually involves a handshake. Key elements of a handshake include:

  • A firm grip - nothing is worse than shaking hands with someone whose hands are a “dead fish”
  • Looking the other person directly in the eyes. Show them you are focused on them.
  • A friendly greeting - like “It’s great to meet you”
  • Repeat the person’s name to help you remember it -  “George, it’s George correct? It’s nice meeting you George.”
  • Providing your name in a clear, audible and slow manner so the person gets it right away.
  • A natural smile to show the person you are upbeat and positive.
  • Listen attentively to what the other person is saying. Show that you are listening by repeating something that they have told you.
